"California is my American dream, or at least the America that exists on TV. I didn’t have a TV set until I was a teenager so when it did arrive on the scene it felt like magic as much as entertainment.
Studio lots are like Mecca to me now - the morality of the writing room, the corny idealism – I swallowed it whole, and yet like any kind of religious experience there is that doubt and self-disgust that comes along for the ride.
The dialogue in the song might as well be with myself, the part that wants to belong and the part that’s repulsed by it, crystallised in liminal space. An identity formed by difference as much as similarity. I mean is there anything more English than an expat - Auden, Hockney, Crisp, an Englishman in the OC?
Perhaps that’s what appeals about Cowboys, they just are, wherever they are and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to just be, wherever I am.”
